What is The Definition of Sentence, Clause, And Phrase - Discussing the term between sentence, clause, and phrase are basically like dismantling of its element from general to basic. Likewise, the general term of vegetable into the specific term of spinach, tomato, and etc. The general unit is the sentence. 

For instance, these several statement inside the table bellow:


SENTENCE 
  • One of the most challenging aspects of conducting research is to clearly identify the problem that leads to a need for your study.
  • Another writing strategy is to use frequent references to the literature throughout this introductory passage.
  • Maria needs to find and review the literature for her study on the possession of weapons by students in high schools.
  • We study research problems so we can assist policy makers when they make decisions, help teachers and school officials solve practical problems, and provide researchers with a deeper understanding of educational issues.

If we elaborate this sentences into more specific ideas, it will be divided into two or more clauses such as in the table bellow:
CLAUSE
One of the most challenging aspects of conducting research is to clearly identify the problem.
That leads to a need for your study.



Another writing strategy is to use frequent references to the literature.
Throughout this introductory passage.


Maria needs to find and review the literature for her study.
On the possession of weapons by students in high schools.

This explained that clauses is combined to create a sentence. In one side, clause has different types in accord of its function (i.e., independent clause and dependent clause). Note that these clauses are also formed by phrases as illustrated in the table below:

There are a considerable amount types of phrases (i.e., Noun phrase, verb phrase, adverb phrase, adjective phrase, prepositional phrase and etc that create clause.

In conclusion, sentence is a word, clause, or phrase or a group of clauses or phrases forming a syntactic unit which expresses an assertion, a question, a command, a wish, an exclamation, or the performance of an action, that in writing usually begins with a capital letter and concludes with appropriate end punctuation, and that in speaking is distinguished by characteristic patterns of stress, pitch, and pauses. While clause is a group of words containing a subject and predicate and functioning as a member of a complex or compound sentence. And phrase is a word or group of words forming a syntactic constituent with a single grammatical function.
